Should the UK concentrate on destination charging over rapid charging?

At Powered On Live 2024, a panel discussion titled “Destination vs. Rapid Charging – What is the Priority?” gathered industry experts to deliberate the future of EV charging infrastructure in the UK.

The discussion came in the wake of the former UK government’s missed target to install six rapid EV chargers at every motorway service station by the end of 2023. The panel, moderated by Matt Adams, Transport Policy Manager at the Renewable Energy Association, featured insights from Dr. Thomas Verghese, Nick Ballamy, and Luis Santiago Pinto.

The discussion centered around whether the focus should be on rapid charging stations, which offer quick charging times akin to traditional fueling, or on destination charging, which provides charging options at places where drivers are likely to park for extended periods, like shopping centers or hotels.

The panel unanimously agreed that both destination and rapid charging play crucial roles in the EV ecosystem and that a balanced development of both types of infrastructure is necessary to support the growing number of EVs on the road. They also discussed the implications of charging infrastructure development on grid demand and the potential technological innovations that could shape the future of EV charging.
