Powered On Live 2023: Is the UK being ambitious enough in its route to net zero?

Net Zero Panel powered On Live

Powered On Live 2023 returns next week, and just like last year, we’ll be returning to the topic of net zero and sustainability.

During one of our panel sessions on day two, we’ll be asking the question – is the UK being ambitious enough in its route to net zero? It’s a question that no doubt is on the lips of many environmental activists, but also those within the electrical industry who see a huge opportunity for growth going forwards.

The world is entering a phase of weather warming dubbed ‘El Niño’, so the next 12 months will showcase the impact that climate change is already having on our planet. That’s why achieving net zero is imperative, but many have wondered whether the UK’s early lead is starting to dwindle, with the likes of the US and EU investing heavily in decarbonisation, while the UK closes up the Treasury’s purse strings.

On the panel are some key experts who will answer the titular question, including Tim Evans, Founder & CEO, 3ti Energy Hubs Ltd; John Parsons, Digital and Technology Manager, BEAMA; George Day, Senior Advisor: Net Zero, Energy Systems Catapult; and Helen Andrews Tipper, Head of Policy, Carbon Trust.

Speaker spotlight: Tim Evans

Tim is a renewable energy specialist with over 30 years’ experience. He has developed multiple renewable energy projects in combined heat & power and gas to grid across the UK, Europe and Africa, for businesses including BTS Biogas, Grissan Renewables (Wm Grant & Sons) and Africa Power Storage. He also led the Innovate UK funded First of a Kind (FOAK) project, commercialising solar car parking technologies in the UK, which resulted in the installation of the UK’s largest solar carpark at Bentley Motors manufacturing facility in Cheshire (1500 spaces).

Speaker spotlight: John Parsons

John is  Digital and Technology Manager at BEAMA, providing technical support for BEAMA activities in power networks, ventilation, heating controls, electric heating as well as Cyber Security. He was the Head of BEAMA Networks until April 2022. At BEAMA, he has worked across the whole range of BEAMA members products.

Speaker spotlight: George Day

George is a senior advisor on net zero, energy policy, economics, regulation and governance. He has over 25 years of UK and international experience as a senior civil servant, regulator, consultant and policy advisor in energy, water, environment and agriculture. George led the development of ESC’s portfolio of analysis and thought leadership on Net Zero Carbon Policy, electricity market reform, and heat & buildings decarbonisation from 2017-22. George has acted as an expert advisor for BEIS and the Climate Change Committee advisory panels. He is a council member (formerly chair) of the British Institute of Energy Economics and sits on the UK Energy Research Centre Research Committee.

Speaker spotlight: Helen Andrews Tipper

Helen is a policy specialist and expert in strategic communications and stakeholder management with 19 years’ experience in the public and private sector. She has experience across a wide range of low carbon policy areas including low carbon transitions, offshore wind, energy efficiency, heat networks and economic development, both in the UK and internationally. Her experience of working on policy development within government, delivering policy implementation and providing external policy advice enable her to offer informed and practical advice to policymakers.

The panel will officially kick off at 10:05am on June 15, 2023, and it’s one that you won’t want to miss.

Powered On Live 2023 is already turning out to be stacked full of interesting sessions covering the length and breadth of the electrical industry. Kicking off the whole event will be Dr Dan Atzori from Cornwall Insight, who will deliver the day one keynote, while the ECA’s Andrew Eldred will kick off day two
