Power boss Patrick Clarke has been awarded a doctorate for achievements in engineering.

As director of network operations at UK Power Networks, he manages the electricity networks which deliver power supplies to millions of people across London, the South East and East Anglia.

He was presented with his doctorate by London South Bank University (LSBU) at the Royal Festival Hall in London yesterday (Monday 6 October).

Clarke said: “I am delighted to receive this honorary doctor of engineering. I am inspired by a famous Nelson Mandela quote: “It always seems impossible until it’s done”. My hope is this amazing and unexpected award will inspire others to realise that everything is possible. In all aspects of my life I aim to make a positive difference and leave an enduring legacy.”

Born in Jamaica, Clarke came to England at the age of eight. He found it difficult to adjust to life in a new country and struggled badly at school. Through the help of one of his teachers he discovered success was a case of hard work.

After leaving school, he joined the London Electricity Board as an apprentice technical engineer in 1978. During his first 12 years as an engineer in south London, he made his aspirations known and moved up the career ladder.

He was made human resources director and connections director before taking on his current role, overseeing the teams that deliver electricity supplies to 8.1million homes and businesses.

He completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in management at LSBU, writing his dissertation on how to motivate and inspire people. The former struggling student graduated with distinction.

Clarke was the Prince of Wales’s ambassador for London for leadership and diversity in 2008 and was made an OBE in 2012 for services to black and minority ethnic youth mentoring.

LSBU vice chancellor Professor David Phoenix said: “We are delighted to confer on Patrick the title of honorary doctor of engineering. His example and message that dedication is the key to success is an inspiration to all.”
