999 calls protected by Borri’s transformer based emergency power supply solutions

A long-standing relationship and previous experience of the outstanding reliability of Borri Ltd’s uninterruptible power supply solutions (UPS) made it the only choice for protecting arguably one of the most critical applications imaginable in the UK – a 999 call centre.

Renowned electrical contractor for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, DB Tec Ltd approached Borri to supply a transformer-based UPS solution to deliver maximum protection and support the NHS Trust’s emergency call centre in Wakefield.

Due to the critical nature of the service’s vital communications system that needed to be supported, it was essential that the UPS system chosen came with secure galvanic isolation to ensure that no compromises would be made on safety and that the UPS units would provide instant and reliable power supply at all times.

DB Tec’s managing director, Dave Bamforth, commented: “The Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s communication lines are critical to saving lives and therefore they demanded the ultimate in power protection. No compromises can be afforded when operating in a life or death environment, which is why DB Tec specified a transformer-based UPS solution from Borri. We know that they provide the best, most protective and resilient back-up power systems on the market.”

With the Yorkshire Ambulance Service demanding only the very best solution with optimum back-up power protection, Borri’s transformer-based UPS units were the obvious choice for DB Tec. Borri supplied two B9000 100kVA units, which have been configured in a dual corded A + B supply with both power paths rated to support the full load for complete redundancy at all times. This configuration will keep the emergency contact number and IT systems available to the public, and removes any single point of failure.

The IT Servers are equipped with dual power supplies so one UPS can be isolated for maintenance or have its supply fail completely, with the other continuing to safely support the load. All legacy equipment is feed via static switches which ensure the emergency call centre will continue to operate by getting power from at least one of the critical UPS feeds.

Mr Bamforth said: “There are no compromises with Borri’s equipment and their superior design ensures its transformer-based UPS units not only supply the ultimate in power protection but also deliver high efficiency levels, giving the end user the best of both worlds.

“We have used Borri UPS equipment for many years. The design makes them much more resilient against spikes than other UPS solutions available. In my opinion the transformer-based units provide the ultimate in power protection and give the level of support needed for critical applications.

“The installation of the B9000s was seamless and the UPS systems are working very effectively to provide the reliable back-up power solution – and peace of mind – required by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.”

Yorkshire’s ambulance service is the latest NHS provider to turn to Borri for its emergency power requirements. The Sheffield-based company recently installed two B9000 160kVA UPS solutions, along with a 300kVA diesel generator, at South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust’s headquarters in Bicester, Oxfordshire, also for the service’s communications systems.

Borri has been helping those in the emergency services industry to explore and understand the true cost of power by demonstrating affordable solutions that take into account power output, day-to-day energy consumption and environmental impact. As with all sectors, any UPS system installed to support the emergency services must offer the highest levels of protection available.

For Borri’s customers, they are able to achieve the best of both worlds – ultimate power protection and high efficiency levels. For more information on the company’s products and services or to arrange a free site survey please visit
