British Gas has increased bills for domestic customers by an average of 14.2% on electricity and gas, only weeks after parent company Centrica predicted substantial rises. This means annual bills will rise by at least £38-£42 for electricity and £60 for gas, according to figures from consumer watchdog energywatch.

The company has given the public limited notice about the changes, which will come into force on 19 September.
