A new cross-sector climate commitment has been launched in a bid to bring more structure and accountability to supply chain decarbonisation across the UK’s energy, transport and built environment sectors.
The BEAMA 2050 Connected Climate Commitment has been backed by nearly 30 organisations, including Schneider Electric, Wilson Transformers, Legrand and Fundamentals, with support from Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and City Electrical Factors (CEF).
The initiative has been developed by BEAMA and is designed to give businesses a shared framework for climate action, covering areas such as science-based targets, governance, circular economy principles and collaboration across the value chain.
That focus on coordination is becoming more important. As Scope 3 emissions move further up the corporate agenda, businesses are facing greater regulatory scrutiny, more demanding customers, and increasing pressure to improve the quality of their reporting. For many firms, the bigger challenge is no longer setting ambitions – it’s proving that those ambitions are translating into action across increasingly complex supply chains.
According to BEAMA, the new commitment is intended to help companies move from broad pledges to more measurable delivery.
Under the commitment, signatories agree to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, set science-based targets aligned to 1.5°C, embed sustainability into governance, integrate circular economy principles, engage responsibly in policy development, and work collaboratively to improve alignment across the supply chain.
It is another sign that decarbonisation is becoming less of a siloed sustainability exercise and more of a cross-sector operational issue, particularly in industries tied closely to electrification and infrastructure delivery.
Yselkla Farmer, CEO of BEAMA, noted, “Supply chains sit at the heart of the Net Zero transition. With Scope 3 emissions now central to corporate climate strategies, collaboration across sectors has never been more important.
“Achieving Net Zero and a circular economy is a shared responsibility – either we succeed together, or we don’t succeed at all. Through the BEAMA 2050 Connected Climate Commitment, companies across the electrical supply chain for energy, transport and the built environment are coming together to move beyond ambition and deliver coordinated, real-world climate action. By working across the value chain, we can turn commitments into practical, scalable solutions that support decarbonisation, circularity and long-term industry resilience.”
Wilson Power Solutions is among the companies to sign up to the initiative. Ayah Alfawaris, Head of Group Marketing & Sustainability at Wilson Power Solutions, added, “BEAMA’s 2050 Climate Commitment is paramount to show an industry-wide consensus and direction towards Net Zero. Our products play a key role in electrification and decarbonisation, and this pledge marked the inception of cross-industry collaboration to ensure we all move steadily together towards a more sustainable future.”
Steven Vallance, Low Carbon Infrastructure Manager, Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, concluded, “It is fantastic that BEAMA has reaffirmed their Climate Commitment. At SSEN Transmission, we know that supporting the wider energy transition and achieving our own carbon reduction targets is only possible with the help of our supply chain. Knowing that BEAMA 2050 Connected companies are on the same journey gives us confidence that together we can continue to deliver a network for net zero in a fair and sustainable way, doing the right thing for people and the planet.”
