Transport for London (TfL) has awarded TotalEnergies a contract to deliver up to 43 rapid EV charging points across London, with chargers rated at 100 kW and 200 kW.
The sites that TfL are contracting out to TotalEnergies will be ‘located near key routes used for essential road journeys typically made by high mileage, commercial users – including taxis and freight – as well as near high streets and local amenities’, with many expected to be in South London, including Bromley, Lewisham and Sutton.
The deal was secured through an official procurement process and marks the second time TfL has awarded a contract to TotalEnergies for rapid charging infrastructure.
Zest is the only other private contractor currently active under TfL’s rapid charging programme. Zest has already installed around 40 rapid charging stations to date, but more tender rounds are planned.
“A further batch of locations across the Transport for London Road Network is going to market within the next few months, demonstrating how TfL is working with the GLA [Greater London Authority] Group and other public sector partners to unlock public land and work with the private sector to help bring the infrastructure needed to keep London at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution,” TfL stated.
There are around 258,000 electric cars and vans registered in London, with access to 27,980 public charge points, including 1,550 rapid chargers. While it already ranks as one of the best places in the UK to access an EV charger, TfL expects London will need between 43,000 and 51,000 charge points by 2030, including up to 3,500 rapid chargers.
David Rowe, TfL’s Director of Investment Planning, commented, “We’re pleased to be playing our part in expanding the delivery of rapid and ultra-rapid charging bays across the capital. By unlocking our land to bring new EV bays forward, we’re working with both TotalEnergies and Zest to provide the infrastructure that Londoners need to have the confidence to transition to electric vehicles.”
“We are pleased to extend our partnership with TfL for this ambitious project,” added Nicolas Garnier, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Charging Solutions UK.
“Through this collaboration, we will leverage our operational expertise as a charge point operator to support the expansion of a reliable, accessible and high-quality charging network for drivers across London.”
TotalEnergies currently operates around 78,000 charging points across Europe, including approximately 3,000 in London.
