UK diesel & petrol car sales ban brought forward to 2035

The UK government has announced that the ban on selling new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars in the UK has been brought forward from 2040 to 2035.

Boris Johnson unveiled the policy as part of a launch event for a United Nations climate summit, COP26.

The new policy comes after experts previously expressed concerns that the original date of 2040 would come too late for the UK to achieve its zero carbon target of 2050.

Mr Johnson added that the ban would come even earlier than 2035 if possible.

The new proposals now also include a ban on the sale of hybrid vehicles, which were not included in the original legislation, announced in July 2017.

Once the ban comes into effect, only electric and hydrogen vehicles will be available to buy.

The COP26 summit is set to place in Glasgow in November, and will bring together world leaders to discuss the serious measures that need to be taken to tackle climate change.
