Independent cable technology company Tratos has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The global company, which manufactures in Britain and Italy and sells to around 52 countries, received the accolade for innovation from the UK’s leading award for business.

The company has invested heavily in new plant, equipment and test facilities in the UK and is committed to staying innovation-focused.

It works shoulder to shoulder with clients from industries such as power, communications, green energy, rail and marine to transport, defence and construction to develop, test and produce bespoke cable for their specific needs.

Tratos’ innovation award was for a new cable sheathing compound, Tratos JBA, that can shrug off the most corrosive elements and protect cable function in the harshest of environments.

Tratos Ltd CEO and chair Dr Maurizio Bragagni said, “These products have advanced safety and performance. They were developed by the company to be used for telecommunication, power or signalling cables.

“The compound is able to resist fire to new and higher standards, and, at the same time, defend against the aggressive acids present in different environments from railway and transport to oil and gas platforms.

“This innovation is bigger than just producing a new generation of cables able to accept the challenge of higher performance standards; it is innovation that will transform unsafe cables.

“We were confident of the quality of the innovation and the advances it brings, but we were absolutely thrilled to learn it had been recognised with a Queen’s Award.”

Tratos representatives will be presented with the award at Knowsley.

Tratos JBA

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise chose Tratos’ cutting-edge JBA compound as its Innovation winner.

The JBA (Jasmine Bragagni Albano), was named for the President of Tratos, Albano Bragagni, OMRI, inventor of the LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) extra compound.

Tratos’ oil and gas JBA is a special cable range designed and manufactured for the oil and gas market to meet necessary test requirements. The JBA family of cables is mud and fire resistant to extreme temperatures and capable of withstanding including water and impact.

The company produced one advanced compound that can be modified to meet specific cable performance elements (e.g. safety, durability, extended operational life) to meet the requirements of a number of important industrial sectors.

The new technology brings big advances for industries including marine, oil and gas, railways and mass transit, as well as high-performance naval applications in a number of different countries.

Tratos has the knowledge, experience and in-house R&D facilities to explore and create next-generation technology and investment in innovation has positioned the company as a leading innovator within the cable industry worldwide.

Tratos’ new compound increases the safety of cable, its resistance to the most invasive and corrosive elements in the environment and its performance.

It also offers significant reduction of fire propagation while continuing to function.  All of these are significant gains and are the compelling reasons behind Tratos’ investment in the technology.

The compound delivered by Tratos, after five long years of testing by an independent body, demonstrated consistent high performance and was consequently accepted for the new development of London Underground.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise celebrate and encourage business excellence. Winners must demonstrate outstanding results in their field of innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity.

Previous innovation category winners include Dyson and Oxford Instruments.
