In a tribute, Dr James Baldwin, senior scientific editor at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, said: “Stephen Hawking’s impact is difficult to overstate.  As the world’s most famous physicist – perhaps even scientist – he was instrumental in inspiring a generation to take up his subject.  He wrote, arguably, the first ‘serious’ popular book on fundamental physics, which brought these ideas to a global audience in a way not seen before.

“Physics plays a fundamental, underlying role in engineering innovation and Hawking has inspired millions to take an interest in these theories and science in general.  Without the remarkable curiosity, bravery, and intelligence of people like him, the world would not have the technology and associated benefits it relies on today.”
