Focus on dependable power

The Eaton 9395 UPS, which combines space-saving compact construction with high efficiency and ABM technology to extend battery life, is the central feature of the Eaton Power Quality stand at this year’s DataCenterDynamics Conference & Expo. Also in the spotlight are Eaton’s innovative ePDU power distribution units, BladeUPS products, busbar systems and circuit breakers, and the latest Variable Module Management System which optimises the efficiency of installations that incorporate multiple UPS modules.

At the conference, Stefan Coote, Product Manager for Eaton Corporation in EMEA, is delivering a paper entitled Designing and Operating for Power Demand. This will cover understanding and optimising power use in data centres, and tools for data centre managers that can be used as an aid to increasing efficiency and capacity while minimising environmental impact.

Ideally suited for use in large data centres and server farms, the Eaton 9395 UPS dramatically improves energy efficiency and sustainability. Available with ratings from 225kVA to 1100kVA (the 1100kVA model is already approved for the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, and approval for other models in the range is imminent) and operating at greater than 94 percent efficiency, the 9395 requires less power, which in turn creates cooler operating conditions. This translates to reduced facility air conditioning requirements, while extending the life of UPS components and batteries. Thanks to their transformerless design, all models have a footprint that is up to 60% smaller than typical competitive units.

Eaton 9395 UPSs have operating efficiencies of 94% or better, they also feature a unique Energy Saver Mode that allows them to maintain excellent total harmonic distortion (THD) performance without the use of inherently inefficient filters. The use of sustainable materials and highly efficient manufacturing technology in the design of the 9395 has resulted in the lowest UPS carbon footprint on the market, with 80 percent less energy required for production and testing.

Eaton’s unique enclosure-based Power Distribution Units (ePDUs), which are also featured on the stand, combine smart power management facilities and optional metering with individual protection for branch circuits to ensure that a fault on one circuit will not affect other load segments. They are available in standard and custom versions, and the range includes vertical “Zero U” models that occupy no space in the server racks.

The BladeUPS products provide scalable, flexible backup power optimised for high-density blade servers and IT equipment. A single module of BladeUPS provides 12kW of power in only 6U of standard rack space, including batteries, and the BladeUPS range offers a scalable solution that delivers from 12 to 60kW of redundant power in a single rack enclosure.

For flexible control of UPS systems made up of multiple modules, Eaton’s Variable Module Management System (VMMS) is a powerful tool that makes it easy for users to maximise both the energy efficiency and reliability of their installations. VMMS is particularly useful in systems that are lightly loaded, as it helps to avoid the inefficiencies typically associated with UPSs that are running at power levels well below their full capacity.

To complement its extensive range of UPS products, Eaton is also showing AC busbar systems and protection products that provide safe, convenient and efficient solutions for the distribution of AC power not only to the UPS systems themselves, but also to ancillary services including lighting, heating and air conditioning.

Throughout the conference and exhibition, experts from Eaton will be on hand to provide visitors with advice and guidance on selecting solutions for specific applications, with the emphasis on combining energy efficiency with versatility, durability and value for money.
