Lumicom sees upsurge in demand

According to luminaire recycling specialist Lumicom, the last six months has seen significant growth in the number of organisations taking advantage of its recycling services, in terms of both requesting advice and sending luminaires for recycling.

"Since the WEEE Directive was implemented end users and contractors have been getting to grips with the implications of the legislation and exploring different ways of addressing their obligations," explained Lumicom director Ernest Magog. "It has now become clear that accredited compliance schemes represent the most cost-effective solution and this is reflected in the upsurge of activity we have seen recently," he added.

A not-for-profit accreditation body, Lumicom is able to act on behalf of many different lighting manufacturers, providing a single point of contact and a simple and transparent process for both end users and manufacturers. Through its tried and tested infrastructure, Lumicom can take end-to-end responsibility for the compliant disposal of luminaires, backed by a comprehensive audit trail.

According to figures released by the Environment Agency, Lumicom is responsible for handling the majority of discarded luminaires entering the waste stream in the UK.
