Pilkington gets UPS system for Italian plant

Siel UPS Systems has supplied Pilkington with a 400kVA UPS System for the company’s float glass production line in San Salvo, Italy.

The UPS is configured as a single module and equipped with static and manual maintenance bypass facilities, interlocked with the site distribution switchgear to prevent inadvertent switching. System topology is true-on-line double conversion in accordance with VFI-SS-111 as defined in BS EN 50091-3, which provides the critical loads – furnace cooling fans, line drives and plant control systems – with a closely-regulated source of output voltage irrespective of input supply conditions.

It is essential the loads are maintained with a secure power supply, as any interruption would cause major disruption to production output and quality, or, in the worst case, premature end of furnace campaign.

The system is installed with a valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery designed to provide a minimum of 20 minutes’ autonomy at the customer-specified loads and duty cycle. The battery is composed of 4 x parallel strings together with a DC switchboard equipped with DC isolators for each string plus an overall UPS – battery DC breaker. The design of the switchboard provides for the addition of further battery strings in the future.
