ScottishPower has been fined £400,000 after being found guilty of breeching health and safety legislation. The fine relates to an incident in 2003, which led to the death of a worker. Alan Ronald, 44, was checking high-voltage power lines near Airdrie in North Lanarkshire on 16 December. He was electrocuted following a power surge. However ScottishPower had failed to ensure the transmission linesman was properly protected from live cables as he carried out the routine tests.
“ScottishPower deeply regrets this tragic accident and commiserates with Mr Ronalds’s family and his colleagues who have suffered greatly. As a result we have tightened safety procedures to minimise the possibility of a repeat of this type of accident,” commented David Rutherford, director of the company’s energy networks.
