Torness power station has been highlighted as the UK’s least efficient nuclear power station. According to a report released by the Nuclear Safety Directorate, the East Lothian power station had over 200 incidents, which caused output losses to rise from 6 to 34%. It is also thought the power station has damage to its reactor core, sparking fears of a major radiation leak.
Hunterston B in Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland is also reportedly suffering from the same problem and saw its output losses rise from 10 to 18%.
British Energy, the operator of both power stations, is said to be disappointed at the losses.
“We are continuing to focus on improving reliability,” explained chief executive Billy Coley.
