Gridserve adds 120 EV charging bays in record first quarter

Gridserve has opened or expanded 12 Electric Super Hubs in the first three months of 2026, marking its fastest-ever start to a year for new charging infrastructure.

A total of 120 new charging bays were added to the company’s Electric Highway network in Q1 2026, although it has stated that it plans to further expand in the coming year. That’s because the company is eyeing a bigger role for the network – including targeting electric HGVs.

New additions to the Electric Highway stretched all the way from Moto Kinross and Fort Kinnaird in Scotland to Folkestone M20 Services near the Channel Tunnel, strengthening coverage across some of the UK’s busiest routes.

The expansion also leant heavily on Gridserve’s partnership with Extra. While the company has a long established connection with Moto, Welcome Break and Roadchef, which together operate the majority of the UK’s service stations, the EV charging operator announced a new partnership with Extra in late 2025.

Extra may not have the largest estate in raw numbers, operating just eight service stations, the company is responsible for two of the UK’s busiest and largest service stations – Cobham on the M25 and Beaconsfield on the M45. That’s why it’s certainly notable that Gridserve plans to roll-out seven new Super Hubs to the company’s service stations throughout 2026, with four already live at Baldock, Beaconsfield, Cambridge, and Peterborough.

George Lloyd, Group Head of Delivery for Gridserve, noted, “The pace of delivery we’ve achieved in the first quarter of 2026 is our strongest yet, and it’s a real testament to the dedication and expertise of the team behind our Super Hubs, as well as the long-term relationships we have developed with our partners.

“From concept through to construction and energisation, this rollout reflects a huge collective effort. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together as we continue to scale a reliable, nationwide charging network for EV drivers across the UK.”

In addition to its new partnership with Extra, Gridserve also has its sights set on capturing eHGVs. With the Government recently taking a renewed focus on getting more eHGVs on the road, operators will likely step up efforts to serve the sector with higher-powered chargers over the next few years. Gridserve is making sure it’s getting in early, with the firm already having opened dedicated motorway charging hubs for eHGVs at Moto Exeter and Extra Baldock. A further nine motorway locations have already been announced under the GRIDSERVE Electric Freightway brand.
