Local authorities vying for a slice of the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund could soon find bidding easier, thanks to UK Power Networks DSO’s new ChargePoint Navigator tool.
ChargePoint Navigator helps local authorities pinpoint the streets most in need of charging bays, and by using data from Field Dynamics, Cenex and Zapmap, real-time electricity network data with local intelligence on parking and travel patterns, helping officers demonstrate both technical feasibility and social benefit in a single evidence pack.
According to UK Power Networks DSO, in early LEVI funding rounds, bids that referenced ChargePoint Navigator leapt from a 30% to a 100% success rate.
Why ChargePoint Navigator could be a key tool in receiving LEVI funding
The LEVI scheme backs councils in England that want to install kerbside chargers for the third of households without off-street parking. Bids must show collaboration with the local distribution network operator and prove chargers will serve residents who cannot plug in at home – two hurdles ChargePoint Navigator sets out to clear.
Beyond supporting grant applications, an expanded version of the platform will let councils and charge-point operators share plans, smoothing the roll-out of infrastructure and avoiding piecemeal deployment.
“We’ve listened to local authorities and acted fast to build a tool that helps make their applications a success. It will help local authorities identify those areas most in need and lend significant credibility to their funding bids,” said Lynne McDonald, Head of Local Net Zero at UK Power Networks DSO.
Rebecca Walsh, Highway Operations Engineer at Medway Council, added, “Since I started to use UK Power Networks’ ChargePoint Navigator, I’ve found it extremely helpful for planning on-street EV chargers. The collaboration has streamlined the process, consolidating all information into a single platform. The training and advice from UK Power Networks has been prompt and efficient.”
A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority added, “The tool has been pivotal in providing an evidence-based approach to site selection. We are proud to support such innovative partnerships that are critical to the Net Zero journey.”
