Formula 1 has enlisted Aggreko to supply a centralised, low-carbon temporary power system at every European Grand Prix this summer, as the sport races towards its target of achieving net zero by 2030.
Under a new seven-year global agreement naming Aggreko the ‘Official Temporary Power Solutions Provider’, the Scottish-founded energy specialist will run all paddock and International Broadcast Compound services from a single, greener power hub. The package combines solar PV, battery energy storage systems and Stage V generators fuelled with hydrotreated vegetable oil, all drawn from Aggreko’s Greener Upgrades range.
A pilot of the concept at three events last year – including the Austrian Grand Prix – removed the need for more than 30 additional generators and cut related CO2 emissions by more than 90% versus 2022. Performance data harvested from those trials is now guiding the roll-out across this season’s European calendar and will inform future deployments worldwide.
Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, commented, “The delivery of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment is driven by new technologies and new ways of working. With Aggreko’s support, Formula 1 is taking another step to reduce emissions across the Paddock. The low carbon power solutions will be in action across our European events this year and will further support our drive to be Net Zero by 2030.”
Aggreko has stated that it will continue refining the system throughout the partnership, using live telemetry from its global fleet to optimise load management and shrink fuel burn. The company says the project also showcases how bespoke hybrid solutions can help commercial and industrial customers meet their own ESG goals.
Robert Wells, Europe President and Head of Events at Aggreko, added, “Our partnership with Formula 1 is built on the strength of our shared vision and values. By improving performance in innovation, sustainability and technology through our work powering some of the sport’s supporting infrastructure, we are showcasing how bespoke solutions using our latest Greener Upgrades™ technologies can help meet ESG goals in a setting that is the ultimate test of performance. We’re proud to collaborate with Formula 1® on its global stage, setting a shining example of how large event operators can accelerate change by learning from this progressive approach in reducing emissions.”
