UK Power Networks has published a new ‘Insiders’ Guide’ designed to streamline the design and installation of new EV charging hubs across the UK.
The distribution network operator is hoping that the new resource will make it clear what necessary land consents are required before installers apply to connect their site to the electricity grid.
According to UK Power Networks, it processes around 100 applications each year from customers keen to launch EV charging hubs, some of which need 3MVA of power – enough to supply more than 2,000 homes. By setting out the hierarchy of consents required, alongside four common scenarios, the company hopes that the guide will simplify what is typically a complex and time-consuming process.
Neil Madgwick, Head of Connections Service Delivery at UK Power Networks, commented, “Having the correct access and licensing arrangements can dramatically speed up the connections process, enabling sites to be up and running in weeks rather than months.”
UK Power Networks has also highlighted its wrap-around service, which takes installers from the design stage right through to final energisation. This collaborative approach sees the network operator working closely with independent connection providers so that EV chargepoint operators can benefit from its existing products without needing lengthy leases and wayleaves.
Madgwick added, “This helps ensure that they can take advantage of our innovative products so they stay in control and don’t need complex leases and wayleaves.
“We receive a lot of enquiries from individuals to large corporations keen to explore low carbon technologies, and are building up a library of helpful guidance as this is new territory for many.”
