Formula 1 partners with Aggreko for low-carbon power at European races

Formula 1 has entered into a multi-year partnership with Aggreko, aiming to supply all European Grands Prix with low-carbon energy solutions from the 2025 season onwards,

The partnership will hopefully get Formula 1 on track (pardon the pun) to achieve its goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2030.

Aggreko will provide centralised power generation systems using renewable sources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, biofuels, solar panels, and battery storage, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions at the events. This system, piloted since 2023, has reportedly cut carbon emissions by over 90% at trial races, including the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix.

The system’s application will eliminate the need for individual teams and stakeholders to deploy their own generators, offering a unified source that powers everything from garages to the International TV Compound during race weekends. This method not only streamlines energy use but also aims to lessen emissions related to the transport of separate generators to each venue.

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, commented, “The entire paddock is part of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment and solutions like the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action. In practice, this means that we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this space – and we look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”

Robert Wells, President of Aggreko Europe and Aggreko Event Services, added, “Aggreko has an unrivalled track record of delivering power transition solutions across the globe, in the most demanding, challenging and mission critical environments to ensure the needs of our clients are met consistently to the highest standards.

“As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition and we’re thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to help them on their journey to be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. We look forward to continuing working with Formula 1, and together energising change for a positive future.”
