National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has announced the appointment of Regina Finn as the chair of its new Distribution System Operator Panel.
This independent body is tasked with advising and challenging NGED, ensuring the development of a smart, flexible network that supports decarbonisation efficiently and cost-effectively for customers and communities. Its creation follows UK Power Networks creating the UK’s first independent DSO.
Regina Finn, with her extensive background in regulatory, competitive, and consumer policy in the infrastructure, water, energy, and telecommunications sectors, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Her past positions include serving as the first Chief Executive of Ofwat, the water regulator for England and Wales, and leading the Commission for Energy Regulation in Ireland and the Office of Utility Regulation in the Channel Islands.
Finn, who is also the Chair of the Low Carbon Contracts Company and the Electricity Settlement Company, expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “The role of the DSO in decarbonising our electricity system is crucial. Distribution networks need to be smart, intelligent, and agile. They can harness the power and flexibility of both producers and consumers to maximise efficiency and minimise costs. I am excited to be part of this journey and support NGED to deliver on the vision of a DSO that creates real value for its customers, its stakeholders, and the environment.”
Ben Godfrey, Director of the Distribution System Operator at NGED, welcomed Finn, noting her wide-ranging experience and strategic mindset as crucial for guiding the DSO in delivering value during the transition to decarbonisation.
Cordi O’Hara, President of National Grid Electricity Distribution, commented on Finn’s leadership skills and her potential impact on the DSO, highlighting the evolving nature of the distributed electricity network and the DSO’s role in anticipating growth, providing flexibility, increasing capacity, and driving value for customers.
Regina Finn is scheduled to make her first appearance as the Independent DSO Panel Chair at NGED’s DSO Governance event on January 31, 2024. The full DSO Panel is expected to convene for its initial meeting in March 2024.
