Options Skills trains over 700 engineers in heat pump tech under Government grant

Options Skills has achieved a milestone by training over 700 gas engineers in air-source and ground-source heat pump technologies. This training initiative is part of the Heat Training Grant, a government-funded project aimed at increasing the number of qualified heat pump installers in England.

Launched in July 2023, the Heat Training Grant aims to train 6,000 heat pump installers across the country. The project, backed by a £5 million grant, offers experienced gas engineers a £500 subsidy towards heat pump training costs.

As an accredited training provider, Options Skills has played a role in this initiative. The organisation, known for its courses in gas, electrics, and renewables, offers training in various regions including the North West, West Midlands, and South East. To date, Options Skills has trained 743 individuals, contributing to the government’s goal of reaching 6,000 trained installers.

The UK Government’s target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 necessitates a skilled workforce capable of installing and maintaining energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies. Heat pumps, considered a viable option for heating homes, are a critical part of this transition.

The training provided by Options Skills is essential for equipping the existing workforce with the necessary skills in a cost-effective manner. The courses are conducted by experienced instructors who have been trained to meet high industry standards and typically possess relevant industry experience.

Options Skills’ course is accredited by LCL Awards, a leading certification body in the Building Services Engineering sector. LCL Awards is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), ensuring that the training aligns with rigorous industry standards and equips trainees with the skills needed to contribute effectively to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

While the majority of the people who have gone through the scheme so far have previously focused on installing gas boilers, the scheme is also available to electrical engineers who have previously worked in the HVAC space. Requirements to receive the grant can be found on the Government’s website
