Fire Isolator Switch – a legal requirement says ESP

Electrical Review Logo

According to leading fire and security products supplier, ESP, there are still a lot of installers who are unaware that a fire isolator switch is a legal requirement with all new fire alarm systems being installed in the UK – coming under the BS539 Part 1 Standard.

ESP’s recently launched BS5839 compliant Fire isolator Switch provides a secure method of isolating the mains supply feeding a fire system control panel and is crucial for fire system maintenance.  The supply can only be isolated by an authorized person, by means of a key lock switch and switching is restricted by key operation. The key is removable in both ON and OFF positions and without the key, a tool would be required to disconnect the power.

A neon indicator is provided to indicate mains present at the switched output.  Bold red, durable casing ensures easy visual identification.  The unit is supplied in a complete enclosure, which is of a standard single gang format with preformed holes for mounting on a surface or 20mm conduit box.

BS 5839 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings – Part 1: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises – is a standard published by the British Standards Institution.
