Charlotte Calloway, energy and environment analyst at Costa, was awarded the inaugural Energy Managers of the Future award for her dedication and commitment to energy efficiency at this year’s Energy Event. The awards programme was aimed at finding the next star in the energy sector and supported by the Energy Institute, the Major Energy Users’ Council (MEUC) and The Energyst.

The judging panel, which included representatives from the Energy Institute, Tim McManan-Smith, editor of The Energyst magazine and Jaz Rabadia, senior manager of energy and initiatives at Starbucks, were impressed with the work Calloway has been doing since she graduated and the impact she is having at Costa.

Calloway manages all of the UK retail stores’ electricity, gas and water usage and ensures compliance with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and the new Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). While visiting Costa stores, Calloway noticed significant energy savings could be made through simple behavioural change. She therefore developed and rolled out a national staff engagement project for energy efficiency within the company’s UK stores with the aim of engaging Costa’s employees on the topic of carbon and energy saving. Each week a member of the team was nominated as ‘Energy Saver of the Week’, the person who put most effort in to being green.

As a reward for her hard work, Calloway has won an Energy Institute energy management course and a year’s Affiliate Membership of the Institute as well. Calloway said, “I am delighted to have won this award for my work with Costa. Promoting energy efficiency within the company is really important as is engaging with every stakeholder to ensure the scheme is a success. It is fantastic to be recognised for my work.”

“We would like to congratulate Charlotte on winning this award,” comments said Alison Willis, portfolio director at i2i Events Group.  “She has clearly demonstrated what can be achieved through simple but effective changes and it is fantastic to see such talent entering the industry. This is the first time we have organised this award scheme and we are looking forward to launching it again next year to find another person with Charlotte’s commitment to the industry.”
