National Physical Laboratory saves time

Electrical Review Logo

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Middlesex operates the group of atomic clocks that form the national time scale, known as the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and carries out laboratory research in the fields of maths and physics. Hampshire-based Powertecnique is currently supplying a service contract to keep it all ticking over smoothly.

NPL’s 84-acre site contains a variety of buildings which house laboratories and test facilities that have been working tirelessly for years to develop international systems of units and time keeping across the globe. Any power outage, even for a second, could be disastrous for the organisation as years of research could be lost.

Powertecnique was contracted through onsite facilities management firm AMEY to service and support a large estate of UPS and generators at the NPL. The contract includes two preventative maintenance visits per year on all equipment and a four-hour response to emergency call outs.
