The North East Power Division of J. Murphy & Sons received a double award at Northern Powergrid’s Annual Health & Safety Conference for customer service and safety performance throughout 2011.

Murphy has been working with Northern Powergrid for the last three years as a principal contractor on the framework for fault repairs. Covering an area equal to approximately one sixth of the land mass of England, from the Scottish borders to the Lincolnshire Wolds, the framework is split into five zones to include work for major conurbations and 31 local authorities.

Over 250 Murphy staff, from five strategically located depots, work to provide a constant 24/7 service, 365 days a year. Since the framework’s establishment, Murphy has provided support in the repair of 30,000 cables with an average of 400 faults attended to each week.  Due to the nature of the framework, all work requires a reactive response with Murphy providing an on-site service within two hours of receiving a call.

Nick Gill, Northern Powergrid’s director of operations, presented the two awards to Murphy for “successfully demonstrating a consistent contribution” towards safety performance and customer service performance in 2011. The event was attended by over 150 delegates including local authorities and statutory bodies, the HSE and other contractors.

John Fitzgerald, Murphy contracts manager, said: “I am extremely pleased to receive such coveted accolades on behalf of J. Murphy & Sons. The awards represent twelve months of sustained hard work and reflect the tremendous team effort by the various departments participating in the Faults Contract.”
