For manufacturers wishing to demonstrate they want to develop the leadership qualities and management skills of their valued staff, they have only until December this year to register for The Manufacturing Institute's MSc in Manufacturing Leadership.
This specialist manufacturing master's education modular programme, awarded by the triple-accredited Lancaster University Management School, has been built around helping future manufacturing leaders reach their true potential while causing minimum disruption to both their working and home lives.
Divided into six modules spread over two years, each module is led by a senior industrialist or academic and comprises four workshop study days plus three evening action learning sets. The taught modules are followed by a final third year dissertation. A significant amount of the programme material is provided online, alongside online tutorial support and student forums.
Siemens Standard Drives, based in Congleton, Cheshire, is one company that has recognised the benefit of academic ‘on the job' training. Their benchmarking coordinator, Matt Byrom, who originally joined the company as a holiday relief worker, quickly proved his worth, was made full-time and placed on the company's own fast-track graduate programme. At the same time, the company sponsored his time on the MSc in Manufacturing Leadership. He has since travelled the world, finding examples of best practice to implement in the factory.
Byrom said: "The MSc course greatly helped me develop my career, and its flexible structure meant I could fit it around the demands of my job and the travel associated with it. As a result I now have a better informed vision of manufacturing best practice, and how to apply ‘world class' innovations into the workplace."
