Addressing the cost of downtime

Standby power company UPS Systems has developed REMO, a unique solution that provides  remote monitoring for the majority of UPS and all generators. It gives IT managers peace of mind by monitoring the status of their IT systems 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Mounting pressure on the National Grid from increased demand for power, including major construction projects such as the 2012 Olympics, has resulted in more frequent power failures. Reports from Parliament suggest that in the last five years, businesses in England and Wales have experienced approximately 96 million unplanned power interruptions. Achieving business continuity has become a top priority for IT managers, and to do that they need real-time information about how their systems are performing.

A recent disaster recovery survey by Symantec found the main concern for nearly half of the respondents was the actual cost of downtime. According to Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics research, the cost of downtime equates to an average of 3.6% of a company's annual revenue – or £36,000 for a business with a £1m turnover.

IT managers can use REMO to receive automatic alerts by SMS or email. REMO can monitor low fuel levels in diesel generators, battery charge levels, system temperatures and overloads, as well as mains grid failures and other critical information.

"Downtime has a huge affect on all areas of a business from the IT systems and equipment, to employee productivity and revenue. That is why we are now offering REMO as standard with many of our UPS installations. It gives our customers an earlier warning of potential problems so they can act faster and reduce the impact of faulty equipment or mains failure," said Tom Sperrey, Managing Director, UPS Systems plc. "By continually monitoring equipment, REMO ensures an IT infrastructure is protected 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and our engineers are always on call, ready to help our customers keep their businesses up and running."
