UK CEM requires no MOQ – offers fast flexible service

Electrical Review Logo

HCD, the UK contract electronics manufacturer that specialises in prototype and short-run  production orders, is bucking the general trend in industry by seeing an increase in business throughout 2009. In order to support this demand, the company has invested in extra staff, new equipment and larger premises.

HCD was founded 12 years ago as a PCB design consultancy and gradually moved first into contact manufacturing, then cable assembly and most-recently, box build as the needs of its customer base developed. Key to its success is the company's commitment to providing a fast, flexible and responsive service, and being prepared to manufacture in small batches – as low as one – for anyone with an idea for a new product.

Explains MD Gene Holmes who founded the company 12 years ago with Commercial Director, Carol Holmes: "Although it is true that for the time being many of the high volume electronics contracts are being manufactured in the Far East or Eastern Europe, we are now seeing a lot of interest for prototype and low volume business. Designers with a great idea need a different type of service and a very fast response – which they typically don't see from some of the household UK CEM names."

HCD has grown organically and by acquisition and now employs 20 staff and has two fully-automated surface mount assembly lines. All production is done in-house, and the company also runs an apprenticeship scheme and trains its staff to be fully-flexible across all production processes to ensure that it can respond very rapidly.

Comments Holmes: "The multi-disciplinary nature of our team means that if we were contacted, say, with an order for three mid-technology boards by a customer we had never heard of,

I am confident that we would be able to deliver inside a week. At the same time, we are also starting to win mid-volume production runs that have come back from off-shore locations due to poor quality."
