Seconds out for Liebert FS from Emerson Network Power

Electrical Review Logo

The Liebert FS from Emerson Network Power is said to be an innovative Flywheel DC Energy Storage System that meets the power storage requirements necessary to ensure power continuity when mains power to the protected load fails. Used in conjunction with a UPS, the Liebert FS avoids battery use for short-term power fluctuations, which helps to extend battery life through reduced cycling. This can be significant bearing in mind that 98% of power failures last for less than 5 seconds.

Liebert FS is a mechanical system for kinetic energy storage, consisting of a rotary disk, motor driven to an optimum speed that enables electric power to be stored and delivered, when necessary, through the same motor, which consequently works as a real generator. Low noise, safe, compact and lightweight, the Liebert FS system is environmental friendly, being based on mechanical operation, with several technical benefits. As the flywheel has no bearings and is not subject to friction, no maintenance is required and the system can operate within a temperature range from -20°C to +50°C.The compact rotor operates at a speed of up to 50,000 rpm and is smaller and lighter than other mechanical power storage systems that use larger flywheels at lower speeds.
