Prison chooses mineral insulated cabling

A major new prison refurbishment at Swansea in south Wales is installing mineral insulated  cabling (MIC) because of its ultimate fire protection features.

The MIC is being installed in the systems powering the warden call function, the locking devices and the fire detection and alarm systems.

Mineral insulated cabling is an enhanced cable which will ensure continuity of power even in a fire because it will not burn and can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000°C, enabling maximum time for escape in the event of fire.

Eddy Richards, regional sales manager for AEI Cables, said: "Because of the nature of this project, mineral insulated cabling offers the ideal protection and guarantees continuity of power in the event of a real life fire situation. Mineral is the ideal solution for large public building developments where there is a need to safeguard power supplies and we recommend it for shopping malls, airports, sports stadia and the like."

The cabling for the project was supplied by Edmundson Electrical in Swansea and main electrical contractor is Lorne Stewart, based in Cardiff.
