New business centre taken back to nature

Building controls expert BG Controls has recently helped the Fusion@Magna Business Centre development to utilise natural energy sources by installing an intelligent ventilation system.

Based on the former site of Templeborough Rolling Mill steel works, the 2500sq.m. Fusion@Magna development opened last year, costing £4.5m, houses 18 workshops and 29 offices for new start-up businesses. Run by Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RIDO) – the Borough Council's regeneration arm – the building is part of a wider regeneration scheme throughout the Rotherham area. It is one of the council's four purpose-built business centres.

The building achieved a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) score of ‘Very good' and boasts many green technologies including protective green foliage around the external walls, sedum roof to the workshops and natural ventilation.

BG Controls designed, manufactured and installed a natural ventilation solution for Fusion using BACnet open protocol technology. With sensors monitoring the internal temperature and CO2 levels, the controls enable a comfortable working environment.

With the ‘living walls' in place the building is protected from the heat of the sun thus lessening the need for air-conditioning with the help of the natural ventilation system.

"BG did a great job," said Bob Taylor, project manager for the RIDO development team. "The Fusion@Magna project is all about renewable energy sources and the natural ventilation system is energy efficient, cost effective and replaces the need for air-conditioning. BG Controls understood exactly what we wanted to achieve and their dedication, experience and knowledge helped them to deliver the perfect solution."
