UK cable manufacturer AEI Cables has supplied the fire performance cables to one of Abu Dhabi's most prestigious development projects.

AEI is providing armoured and standard cables to ensure continuity of power for the fire alarm and detection systems including exhaust fans for the Institute of Science and Technology at the Masdar Project.

As the first major hydrocarbon-producing economy to take such a step, Abu Dhabi is establishing itself as a centre of innovation with the Masdar Initiative.

Masdar City is of the most ambitious sustainable developments in the world, and will probably be the world's first zero carbon, zero waste city, powered entirely by renewable energy sources.

Graeme Aittis (pictured), Middle East general manager for AEI Cables, said: "We are proud to be associated with such a prestige project. The scale of the project is staggering. This development makes challenging progress in every field and we are pleased to be involved."

The city will be car free and pedestrian friendly. Utility services at the city will include energy, district cooling, wet utilities including water, waste water, re-use water and storm water, telecommunications and waste management.

The main electrical contractor for the development is STS Abu Dhabi.
