David Millar, head of technical services at Select, the trade association for electrical contractors in Scotland, has won the UK CBI Trade Association Forum's Annual Individual Contribution Award.

At a ceremony in a Park Lane hotel, chaired by broadcaster John Sargeant, Millar last week received the award in recognition of his many years of work to advance the causes of technical excellence and safety awareness in the electrical contracting industry both in Scotland, the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe.

Alick Smith, president of Select, said: "This award could not have gone to a more deserving winner. David Millar has made a huge input over the years to the technical development of electrical contracting standards. His work has made a major contribution not only to steadily improving levels of safety for electrical contractors but also to their enhanced technical performance."

Millar has most recently been involved in the roll-out by Select throughout Scotland of an upgraded industry-wide safe isolation programme which, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, aims to highlight the management of electrical safety.

He said: "Naturally I am very honoured to be given this award but I believe it is also made in recognition of all of the technical team at Select, without whose contribution we could not possibly have made as much progress as we have over recent years in promoting electrical safety for the protection of both practitioners and consumers"
