New technology in earth continuity testing

Electrical Review Logo

Seaward has developed a new method of carrying out earth continuity testing when undertaken as part of the electrical safety testing of portable appliances.
The technology recognises a 200mA test current is becoming the European standard for in-service testing and testing after repair. Seaward’s new test technology uses a dual current high intensity test to overcome contact resistance problems or other situations where weak conductor connections may inhibit protective earth testing with conventional 200mA currents.
The Seaward 200mA test has been designed to help overcome variations in measurement that can be caused by contact resistance between the test probe and the appliance under test. It achieves this by applying a short duration high current pulse to ‘pre-condition’ the equipment under test, followed by a 200mA test current to make the appropriate measurements.
