Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) chief executive Ian Marchant has been announced as the chair of a new group to get businesses to think more about climate change.
The Climate Change Business Delivery Group, which will consist of high level representatives from the business world, will act as a catalyst for Scottish businesses sharing best practice and challenging each other to do more to tackle climate change.
Announcing Marchant’s agreement to develop and chair this new group, Scottish environment minister Ross Finnie said: “Scotland takes climate change seriously, but an effective response to climate change cannot be achieved by government alone. Scotland’s businesses have a role to play in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that are contributing to climate change.
“I am encouraged by the commitment that exists amongst many Scottish businesses to address the climate change agenda and I am delighted that someone of Ian Marchant’s stature has agreed to chair this group. I look forward to seeing the work of the Business Delivery Group in looking at ways to tackle climate change.”
Ian Marchant added: “We are facing a climate crisis, but it is one to which Scotland – with its wealth of natural resources – is exceptionally well-placed to respond. Scottish-based businesses can demonstrate leadership on climate change issues and capitalise on the economic development opportunities that undoubtedly arise from them.
“To do so will require effective partnerships with other organisations throughout Scotland. I am determined that this Group should not only be radical in its thinking on climate change issues, but also effective in ensuring others – including government – play a full part mounting an effective response to them.”
