No nuclear decision until end of decade

Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) has announced it will wait until the end of the decade before deciding whether to invest in nuclear power stations.
According to Ian Marchant, chief executive of SSE, the company is keeping an active watching brief on the issue.
“As a company SSE has no experience of dealing with nuclear-related issues such as waste, safety and decommissioning.
However we are keeping an active watching brief on whether to get involved. We would not build or operate a nuclear power station but we could get involved in a consortium,” he added.
A senior manager has already been appointed and will spend time researching SSE’s nuclear options.
At the group’s annual meeting in Bournemouth at the end of July, Marchant highlighted by the turn of the decade he will have a more comprehensive view of the economics of nuclear investment, allowing the company to make a more informed decision.
