ABB has won contracts worth a total of £26m from National Grid to extend two existing 400kV substations in London and increase the reliability of the power grid.

ABB will extend two high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations that it completed recently in London. The projects, which will run until 2008, are part of National Grid’s ongoing programme to reinforce the power grid serving the London area.

For one 400kV substation in north London, ABB will supply a 240MVA 400/132kV supergrid transformer and five GIS switchbays, plus associated cabling and equipment, for installation within the existing substation building.
