AB CONNECTORS SOLVES MOBILE POWER DILEMMA

AB Connectors Ltd, the leading UK based connector manufacturer, which is part of TT electronics plc, is launching a new power converter, which will help to solve the mobile power problems frequently encountered by the Armed Forces.

The new SB0RD power converter, a 70W 24V-14V ruggardised converter, is fully qualified for harsh environments and has been tested in operational conditions by the Armed Forces. The SBORD is inbuilt into the SB0RD102 connector (commonly known as the slave plug connector) and offers huge weight and space benefits over other mobile power solutions currently available.

The converter, recently used in the Middle East, where it performed faultlessly throughout its trial period, has two standard cigar outputs which enable the user to employ many Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) power adapters, such as those commonly found on communication devices like laptops, mobile phones, PDAs and GPS systems, as well as heater elements and lights. It takes the vehicle supply of 24 – 28V and converts it into a protected 14V output, the standard laptop requirement, and can be used in conjunction with Portable Power Systems (PPS) that have converter, inverter and battery storage capabilities.

Harvey Preston, Managing Director of AB Connectors, comments: “The new SB0RD power converter will be a major boost to the Army, helping to keep many communication and IT systems powered whilst on the move. We have worked closely with the Joint Armed Forces to provide a solution to the mobility problems experienced on a daily basis and users have commented the SBORD offers significant advantages in terms of space and weight over existing alternative solutions. The converter allows rapid deployment forces to effectively communicate critical information, an essential consideration in today’s military environment.”

As the market leader of connectors and interconnection systems specifically designed to operate in harsh environments, where high performance and reliability are mandatory, AB Connectors is at the forefront of innovation and product development. It strives to meet customer requests, with feedback being used in the design process, and has considerably expanded its product range over recent years. Its connectors protect against extremes in temperature and humidity levels, as well as other environmental elements.
