Success for GE’s Motor Protection Circuit Breaker technology despite tough market conditions

GE Consumer and Industrial's Power Protection division has announced that sales of its Surion motor protection circuit breakers range have doubled over the past 2 years. Despite the difficult market conditions which continue to affect the industrial automation sector generally, Surion seems to be bucking the trend and is being used in an increasingly wide range of applications.
Surion products were originally used primarily as individual starter components for stand-alone machine control and protection. They are now being viewed as an integral part of more broadly based automation solutions in HVAC, automotive, processing and building services applications. System integrators and panel builders who traditionally used specific components requested by customers such as fuses, fuseholders, overload relays etc., have increasingly turned to Surion which combines all their features within a single, compact, multi-functional unit.

A GE spokesman commented: “Surion makes for a more practical, efficient and cost effective solution. It also offers environmental benefits compared to traditional components – less energy required in manufacture and less waste. Its growing market success clearly demonstrates that time pressed engineers want more imaginative, simpler and lower cost solutions”

Surion is a complete range of compact and reliable motor starters rated from 0.1A to 63A in two different frame sizes (45mm and 55mm width). It represents a new motor protection system for switching and protecting three phase induction motors to 30kW at 400Vac with current ratings to 63A. Both the rocker lever and rotary handle mechanism guarantee clear status indication, with ON-OFF-TRIPPED positions showing device status at a glance.

The range is especially designed to ensure total connectivity with the rest of the GE family of manual motor starters and control products. They can be combined with the M and CL contactors to form a fuseless starter solution. The entire line is available with thermal/magnetic trip for complete motor protection, or with magnetic protection only for short-circuit protection in combination starters. A complete range of accessories is also available providing solutions for all types of application.
