British Gas takes wind turbines to individual homes
British Gas announced plans on Tuesday that would allow homeowners to generate a free supply of electricity from wind power.
The energy supplier has signed an exclusive agreement with Windsave to make the roof-top wind turbines, first reported in the May issue of Electrical Review, available to UK households. An initial pilot later this year will see the household windmills installed on selected properties, both private and local-authority owned, in Scotland and the south west and, if successful, these will be made available across the country.
The turbine, called the Windsave WS1000, can generate up to 1kW at 12m/s rated wind speed and can operate in wind speeds as low as 3m/s, with over-speed protection.
