Harrow relights

Electrical Review Logo

Lighting refurbishment at Harrow Council's Civic Centre is designed to create a comfortable lit environment for the council's employees and to achieve a significant reduction in excessive energy use.

In addition, it is helping the council automatically comply with lighting legislation. Lighting can account for up to half of a commercial building's electricity use, with the potential to save 25 per cent of the entire electricity load.

The main Civic Centre in Harrow is a four storey building, covering 16,000m2, that was built in the 1950s. So far, committee rooms, cellular offices, open plan office areas and corridors have benefited from lighting refurbishment.

Ex-Or's LightSpot controls have been incorporated so that lighting is provided automatically whenever it is required. When areas are vacated, however, or levels of natural light are already more than adequate, the LightSpot controls ensure that the lights automatically switch off or dim to eliminate energy waste.

A scene-setting and dimming system enables users to choose from a range of different lighting scenes. Ex-Or's LightSpot controls dim and brighten the lights, and switch the lights on and off in open plan and cellular office areas and corridors by monitoring the presence of occupants and by measuring the amount of natural light available.
