Prescott reacts with fury at Greenpeace energy protest

The deputy prime minister, John Prescott, was outraged on Tuesday when Greenpeace protestors scaled his house to protest against energy waste.

The eight protestors set up two solar panels on the house and said they would leave the panels, along with rolls of roof insulation and low-energy lamps, as a present for Prescott.

Laura Yates, one of the protestors, said the demonstration was aimed at Prescott because he was responsible for housing policy and Greenpeace wanted to highlight the amount of energy wasted by domestic housing in Britain.

We made it clear we were from Greenpeace, it was a peaceful protest and we were not going to do any damage,” she said. “We just hope that we’ll be able to give them some tips on improving the energy efficiency of their home.”

In response to the protest, a Labour Party spokesman said Prescott played a key role in delivering the Kyoto agreement.

The protestors were arrested when they ended their demonstration and have been released on bail.
