Baywatch star arrested during protest over electric cars

A former Baywatch actress was this week arrested along with another woman during a vigil in California meant to save 70 General Motors electric cars from destruction.

Alexandra Paul, who played Lieutenant Stephanie Holden in the television series, was arrested for sitting in a car for two hours while it obstructed the path of trucks hauling the cars to a recycling plant. Both women were booked on suspicion of failing to obey an officer.

The two were among dozens of protestors holding a vigil at the GM centre where the last EV1 cars were stored before transportation to the recycling plant. The vigil began on 16 Feb, when GM reclaimed the1,000 battery-powered cars it had leased. The company said the cars were not popular enough to become profitable and declined the protest group’s offer of $1.9m (£1m) for the vehicles. They said there wasn’t enough supply of the car’s 2,000 parts, which could make the vehicles unsafe and lead to lawsuits.
