Energy facility in Sheffield nears completion

Electrical Review Logo

Last week’s installation of a steam turbine and 21MW generator in Onyx’s Energy Recovery Facility in Sheffield marked entry to the final period of the construction project.

The equipment will allow Onyx to recover energy from the waste treated in the facility, created by Onyx to replace another ERF as part of an integrated waste management contract with Sheffield City Council.

The energy recovered is used to generate heat for buildings in the city as well as to supply electricity to meet the demands of the site. Excess electricity is supplied to Yorkshire Electricity’s local network under a Non Fossil Fuel Obligation Contract.

The facility will produce up to 39MW of thermal energy and up to 20MW of electrical energy from the treatment of waste. It is due for completion in early 2006.
