Switchgear for arctic temperatures

Electrical Review Logo

Very low temperature can lead to embrittlement of plastics and metals, restrict the functionality of switches and fuse gear or make them unsafe. This may even render them inoperable and they can become a safety hazard for operators and surrounding electrical equipment.

Mersen now has developed NH-Switchgear which performs reliably even at extremely low temperatures. It can be used safely under arctic conditions of minus 40° Celsius and offers a number of additional product advantages.

The significant improvements were mainly achieved by increasing the mechanical strength of the NH-Switchgear. It can now be opened, closed and the fuse-links can be replaced at minus 40 degrees Celsius. Special care was taken to make sure that no wear or damage will occur that could potentially cause a malfunction. .
