What’s the secret to greater LED adoption in commercial buildings?

At Powered On Live 2024, we gathered experts to address the critical issue of why commercial properties are slow to adopt LED technology despite its evident benefits and potential for significant long-term savings.

Moderated by Dan Lister, President of the Society of Light and Lighting, the panel included insights from Matt Harwood, UKI Key Account Manager at Signify, and David Hunt, Managing Director at Glamox.

The panel delved into the challenges and solutions associated with upgrading commercial lighting systems to LED technology. They discussed the barriers such as the initial high capital expense and the complexity involved in retrofitting sophisticated commercial spaces that differ significantly from straightforward residential setups.

David Hunt emphasised the complexity of installations in commercial buildings due to their integrated systems and constant use, making retrofit projects more challenging than simple residential bulb replacements. Matt Harwood highlighted the need for the industry to present compelling business cases to commercial stakeholders, demonstrating the quick payback period of LED investments despite the upfront costs.

The discussion also touched on the potential of smart technology in lighting systems, which goes beyond simple illumination to enhance building management and energy efficiency. The experts agreed that the integration of smart sensors and IoT capabilities in lighting systems could revolutionise building management by providing detailed data on space utilisation, environmental conditions, and energy consumption.
