The IEE has welcomed the announcement by the EPSRC of £4.2m to create an Electronics Design Centre at Glasgow University.

The centre will establish a purpose-built laboratory and recruit academics to work at the cutting edge of nanoelectronic, optoelectronic and bio-electronic technologies in order to advance the field of electronics and electrical engineering.

The IEE particularly welcomed the multi-disciplinary approach that will address the increasing need to combine these diverse technologies for biomedical, environmental, safety and communications applications.

Led by Professor David Cumming, the centre will also promote excellence in teaching and research training in electronics design.

Professor Steve Furber, a member of the IEE’s IT Sector Panel, said: “This is a welcome step towards creating the right environment for UK success in electronics innovation.”
