Philips Lighting: – providing Romec with flexible control

Keen to harness the flexibility offered by controls, ECS – Philips Ominsense has been installed in Romec’s Swindon offices.

Recognised as one of the UK’s leading providers of integrated facilities solutions, Romec provides the means to improve business costs and energy consumption for its blue chip clients such as the Royal Mail Group. It was hardly surprising therefore that Romec wanted to maximise energy savings opportunities by employing lighting controls in its own facilities.

ECS – Philips Omnisense was the ideal solution in providing the highest level of interactive control for the modern office. Omnisense combines visual comfort, flexibility and economy achieving energy savings of between 50-70% depending on the individual situation.

In addition to greater efficiency, Romec stipulated that there should be minimal disruption to the daily working environment therefore installation had to be as fuss free as possible. The Philips TBS630 recessed luminaire was selected since it is equipped with the Omnisense control and DALI ballast thereby offering a truly integrated controls package without the need for external sensors. For the contractor it was a simple case of plugging in the Wieland connectors for a quick and easy installation, and, with in excess of 300 luminaires to fit, time indeed was of the essence.

The benefit of DALI ( Digital Addressable Lighting Interface ), the industry standard for electronic ballast control, is that it allows independent control of luminaires in a lighting system with switching and dimming functions activated through a control wire. The DALI control wire, moreover, is independent of the mains supply, giving exceptional freedom in installation and thereby further reducing installation costs and time. It also allows for easy relocation of the control path to accommodate changes in office layout.

Once this luminaire-based control system was installed, Romec immediately gained the benefit of interactivity on 3 key levels: daylight linking, occupancy control and personal light
Daylight linking control continuously adapts the artificial lighting level as the natural light varies over the working day. Thus a constant pre-defined level of illumination is maintained.
Occupancy control reduces the energy costs by switching off or dimming down lights in unoccupied areas. Lights switch on automatically when an occupant enters an area and dim down gradually until they finally switch off when the area is vacated.

Personal lighting control allows the optimum visual environment to be created for every user and situation. This is particularly important when considering the comfort and efficiency of the individual and tasks being performed. Here, Onmisense can be used in combination with hand held or wall mounted remote controllers to manually adjust the light settings.

Dennis Baber, consultant with National Design Consultancy, when evaluating Romec’s needs, stated, “ We had to consider not only the optimal lighting distribution and reduced running costs but also flexibility. Today, modern office layouts are no longer fixed, they have to be adaptable. Working hours too, are flexible and often longer than ever before, therefore, the lighting design needed to accommodate these changes. The Onmisense control system achieves precisely that”.
