Doepke Demonstration: How RCDs Prevent Fire

Insulated surfaces contaminated with dust or conductive liquids, subjected to low levels of sustained leakage currents represent a real fire hazard. These leakage currents and the resultant flame are sufficient to ignite surrounding materials or flammable gases in the event of a leak. A correctly selected RCCBs can greatly reduce the risks associated with Phase to Earth Leakage currents. Guidance on the selection and installation of the correct rating and type of RCD is covered in the IEE wiring regulations. Further information available at or email
